Dynamic Third Network Services for the Digital Economy and Hyper-connected World

The communications industry is transitioning to agile, assured, and orchestrated services that are optimized for the digital economy and the hyper-connected world. Emerging “Third Network” services provide an on-demand experience with user-directed control over service capabilities. These services are delivered over automated, virtualized, and interconnected networks powered by LSO (Lifecycle Service Orchestration), SDN, NFV, and CE 2.0 (Carrier Ethernet 2.0).

Our seminars will focus on exciting MEF-led industry initiatives to build a global ecosystem of connected networks supporting orchestration of dynamic services across multiple providers and multiple technology domains within provider networks. MEF is working closely with many of the world’s leading service and technology providers, open source projects, and industry organizations to accelerate the creation of this global ecosystem, which will be enabled by standardized open LSO APIs that orchestrate standardized services.

Detailed Agenda

Session Title

10:00 Opening Remarks

Welcome, objectives, regional perspectives and agenda overview

MEF Strategy for Dynamic Third Network Services

This presentation will provide a technology and market evolution update and present the new MEF.

The presentation will highlight MEF's work in four major areas:

  • Third Network services - including orchestrated Layer 1/2/3 connectivity services (Wavelength, CE 2.0, IP) plus Layer 4-7 cloud services
  • LSO (Lifecycle Service Orchestration)
  • Reference Implementations - OpenLSO, OpenCS, LSO Hackathon, UNITE, MEFnet
  • Certification programs for services, equipment, professionals

Wavelength, CE 2.0 and IP Third Network Services

MEF is uniting industry efforts to enable orchestrated connectivity services (wavelengths, CE 2.0, and IP) and orchestrated Layer 4-7 cloud services (e.g., NFV-based security) across multiple provider networks. Service providers want to offer these services over more automated, virtualized, and interconnected networks that are more closely married to the cloud. But to expand their service reach and deliver more dynamic services, they need a standards-based approach that facilitates seamless service interoperability with other providers and enables end-to-end service automation with open APIs.

This presentation spotlights MEF’s new service-related work beyond CE 2.0. We will provide an update on MEF’s Layer 3 IP project that will create a standard set of attributes that can be used to define IP services delivered over multiple provider networks. We also will cover recently launched initiatives for Layer 1 wavelength services, security-as-a-service, and other service-related topics.

Building A Global Ecosystem Of Connected Networks With LSO APIs.

MEF has defined an LSO Reference Architecture with APIs to automate the entire service lifecycle for coordinated management and control across all network domains responsible for delivering end-to-end services over multiple operator / multiple technology networks. This increasingly important area of work enables service providers to transition away from today’s silo-structured BSS/OSS approach towards flexible end-to-end service orchestration that leverages the benefits of SDN and NFV.

This presentation will provide a progress update on LSO-related developments, and highlight opportunities for professionals to play roles in accelerating LSO work. We will cover such topics as the LSO Reference Architecture & Framework (MEF 55), interfaces, Inter-/Intra-provider APIs, operational processes/threads, and information models, as well as LSO’s relationship with SDN & NFV.

11:25 Break

MEF Reference Implementations: Accelerating Adoption of Third Network Services and LSO

MEF's OpenLSO is primarily aimed at service providers that wish to accelerate their adoption of LSO as defined by MEF in order to achieve fully-featured end-to-end service orchestration of MEF-defined service lifecycles. The output of OpenLSO includes pointers to upstream Open Source projects that contain LSO-based software code contributions, as well as providing use cases and reference implementations on how to use that upstream code.

This presentation will describe the different LSO capabilities addressed within OpenLSO and it can accelerate the adoption of LSO by service providers in order to achieve fully-featured end-to-end service orchestration of MEF-defined service lifecycles.

Panel Session 1: Inter-provider Wholesale Challenges & Industry Initiatives

Wholesale service providers face a myriad of technical and operational challenges in orchestrating services that will only increase in complexity with the addition of virtual network domains and multi-provider delivery scenarios. Operators are looking for orchestration software solutions that integrate the 8 key capabilities of LSO – service fulfillment, control, performance, assurance, usage, analytics, security, and policy based on open and interoperable standards – to help them address these challenges. During the Q&A discussion in this session, top experts will explore the complexity of the situation and discuss practical steps that service providers can take to overcome orchestration hurdles. Speakers will share perspectives on automating various aspects of the end-to-end service lifecycle, and will discuss LSO solutions within the context of the broader orchestration ecosystem.

12:45 Lunch

New Third Network Services & Professional Certification Programs

Highly successful in helping create the $80+ billion market for CE services and technologies, MEF’s certification programs for services, equipment, and professionals are now evolving to accelerate the industry transition to Third Network services powered by LSO, SDN, NFV & CE 2.0.

Introduced in May 2017, the Third Network Professional Certification Framework creates a global ecosystem of certified professionals with leading-edge skills required to support agile, assured, and orchestrated Third Network services. The framework comprises a family of essential, professional, and expert level certifications. These will cover the concepts and skills needed to build automated, virtualized, and interconnected networks powered by LSO (Lifecycle Services Orchestration), SDN, NFV, and CE 2.0 (Carrier Ethernet 2.0). Development of these advanced networks will accelerate the worldwide transition to on-demand Third Network services that provide user-directed control over service capabilities.

This presentation will cover the new developments in MEF professionals and services certification programs. Highlights of this presentation include:

  • MEF Third Network Professional Certification Framework
    • Overview and Evolution of this new MEF Professional Certification Program
    • Revision to the MEF-CECP (Carrier Ethernet Certified Professional)
  • MEF Services Certification Program
    • New Cloud-based testing offering coming in 2017
    • Orchestrated LSO-enabled Services Certifications
    • Evolution and roadmap of the MEF Services Certification program

Interactive Discussion - Multi-operator Service Delivery

Multi-operator service delivery: The immediate and emerging business opportunities enabled by orchestration

This interactive session with panelists will discuss multi-operator services and the immediate business opportunities enabled by orchestration. This session will be an interactive discussion where the attendees will be polled and have the opportunity provide their view on Multi-operator services and where panelists will comment on poll answers.

Closing Remarks and Questions

This presentation will summarize the seminar content and provide a view of how to engage with MEF.
