Dynamic Third Network Services for the Digital Economy and Hyper-connected World

São Paulo – September 27, 2017

The communications industry is transitioning to agile, assured, and orchestrated services that are optimized for the digital economy and the hyper-connected world. Emerging “Third Network” services provide an on-demand experience with user-directed control over service capabilities. These services are delivered over automated, virtualized, and interconnected networks powered by LSO (Lifecycle Service Orchestration), SDN, NFV, and CE 2.0 (Carrier Ethernet 2.0).

This seminar will focus on exciting MEF-led industry initiatives to build a global ecosystem of connected networks supporting orchestration of dynamic services across multiple providers and multiple technology domains within provider networks. MEF is working closely with many of the world’s leading service and technology providers, open source projects, and industry organizations to accelerate the creation of this global ecosystem, which will be enabled by standardized open LSO APIs that orchestrate standardized services.

SD-WAN Managed Service Use Cases, Challenges and MEF standardization work

SD-WANs have become very popular because they solve current business challenges while leveraging new SDN, NFV, orchestration and cloud technologies. Service providers are challenged to quickly introduce new SD-WAN managed services due to the lack of standardization of service definitions and architectures. In this presentation, you will learn about the MEF's SD-WAN standardization work and different use cases from the perspective of service providers with different delivery models.

Panel Session: SD-WAN a reality check

Service providers are starting to invest in open platforms based on SDN/NFV technologies and reshaping how they offer hybrid WAN services. This includes variations on some old technology with some new emerging technology, including SD-WAN. The WAN and mix of network services are just the beginning. These new platforms will also serve to connect to data centers, central locations, and distributed branch locations. They already are expanding to other managed services beyond standard network services. What has driven this development? What are customers demanding? What is the roadmap for these services? On this panel, we will hear a perspective on evolving network services requirements, including the need for end-to-end visibility. And multiple service providers will share their recent announcements and near-term plans on the panel. What problems need to be solved for customers? For service providers? What have been the major challenges? Where do we go next?

This presentation will review the different attributes that make Carrier Ethernet 2.0. Once the CE 2.0 foundation as been set, we will review the bases that make a Third Network Services and how MEF's specification and Reference Implementations can be leverage to create services that are agile, assure and orchestrated.

This presentation will provide an overview on LSO-related developments, and highlight opportunities for professionals to play roles in accelerating LSO work. We will cover such topics as the LSO Reference Architecture & Framework (MEF 55), interfaces, Inter-/Intra-provider APIs, operational processes/threads, and information models, as well as LSO’s relationship with SDN & NFV.

New Third Network Services & Professional Certification Programs

Highly successful in helping create the $80+ billion market for CE services and technologies, MEF’s certification programs for services, equipment, and professionals are now evolving to accelerate the industry transition to Third Network services powered by LSO, SDN, NFV & CE 2.0.

Introduced in May 2017, the Third Network Professional Certification Framework creates a global ecosystem of certified professionals with leading-edge skills required to support agile, assured, and orchestrated Third Network services. The framework comprises a family of essential, professional, and expert level certifications. These will cover the concepts and skills needed to build automated, virtualized, and interconnected networks powered by LSO (Lifecycle Services Orchestration), SDN, NFV, and CE 2.0 (Carrier Ethernet 2.0). Development of these advanced networks will accelerate the worldwide transition to on-demand Third Network services that provide user-directed control over service capabilities.

This presentation will cover the new developments in MEF professionals and services certification programs. Highlights of this presentation include:

  • MEF Third Network Professional Certification Framework
    • Overview and Evolution of this new MEF Professional Certification Program
    • Revision to the MEF-CECP (Carrier Ethernet Certified Professional)
  • MEF Services Certification Program
    • New Cloud-based testing offering coming in 2017
    • Orchestrated LSO-enabled Services Certifications
