Enabling Dynamic MEF 3.0 Services Over Automated Networks

With the launch of MEF 3.0, MEF is accelerating the ability of service providers to create a global ecosystem of networks that deliver agile, assured, and orchestrated services optimized for the digital economy. These game-changing services provide an on-demand, cloud-centric experience with user and application-directed control over network resources and service capabilities.

These seminars will provide an overview of key MEF 3.0 work areas, including: (1) standardized, orchestrated Carrier Ethernet, IP, and SD-WAN services, (2) LSO APIs for service orchestration across multiple providers and over multiple technology domains, (3) New agile service & technology certification and professional certification programs, (4) MEF's role in the emergence of 5G networks, and (5) New MEF 3.0 Implementation Projects on MEFnet.

Further, the seminars will examine the progress on new service developments in the CALA region and the expected impact of MEF 3.0 on regional services providers. New MEF engagement opportunities will be discussed related to MEF’s growing global community of service providers, technology solution suppliers, developers, open source projects and SDOs partners, large enterprise advisors, and MEF certified professionals.

Seminar Areas of Focus:

  • The transition from CE 2.0 to MEF 3.0
    MEF has over the last 4 years dramatically increased the scope of its activities beyond Carrier Ethernet to all agile, automated digital services. An overview will be provided of the new scope of work of MEF and why standards are even more important today for the South African service provider market.
  • SD-WAN
    MEF has developed the industry’s first ever SD-WAN service definition to enable service providers to use standardized terminology and to support standardized lifecycle service orchestration (LSO). An overview will be provided of MEF’s standardization work in this area including availability and plans for MEF 3.0 certification and the opportunities this will open up for South African access providers.
  • Lifecycle Service Orchestration (LSO)
    Wider MEF 3.0 standards that enable orchestration of MEF-defined services, including SD-WAN, to support federation using the LSO framework, and how these will support L4-L7 virtualized services.

Opening Remarks & MEF Regional Activities Update

The opening session will discuss the seminar objectives, agenda and key takeaways that the participants to consider. Further, the expanding nature of the "MEF Community" will be discussed including MEF regional 2018 activities and new opportunities for participation. The audience will be queried for any special topical requests.


MEF Global Perspective - Presentation & On-stage Interview

In November 2017, MEF introduced the MEF 3.0 transformational framework to define, deliver, and certify agile, assured, and orchestrated services across a global ecosystem of automated networks. Emerging MEF 3.0 services will provide an on-demand, cloud-centric experience with unprecedented user- and application-directed control over network resources and service capabilities.

MEF's COO, Kevin Vachon will present perspectives on relevant global services trends, the rationale for MEF 3.0, early industry adoption and progress on MEF 3.0 projects. In particular, he will discuss Tier 1 operator trends and their potential impact on providers in the CALA region. He will cover how MEF's business model is transforming to enable new forms of participation, to place more emphasis on tangible implementations and to meet the increasing demands for process agility and speed to market for new MEF works.

This session provides an overview of the major elements of the MEF 3.0 services framework and a high level roadmap of the transition from CE 2.0 services to the various stages of MEF 3.0 evolution. MEF 3.0 elements includes Services, LSO Framework and APIs, Certification and Community.

MEF 3.0 Services

This segment outlines the services components of MEF 3.0. MEF 3.0 drives continuous development of the world’s most advanced standards-based network services. The planned MEF 3.0 service family includes dynamic Carrier Ethernet, Layer 1, IP, SD-WAN, Security-as-a-Service, and other virtualized services that will be orchestrated over programmable networks using LSO (Lifecycle Service Orchestration) APIs.

MEF 3.0 CE R1 is the first available release within the MEF 3.0 framework, while work on standardizing other orchestration-ready services is progressing. CE 2.0 and MEF 3.0 CE Release 1 services are compared and a progress report and roadmap on all major areas of services standardization is reviewed. A second special area of focus is MEF's SD-WAN activities.


Panel: Next Gen Services – Regional Perspectives

Service providers are starting to invest in open platforms based on SDN/NFV technologies and reshaping how they offer hybrid WAN services. This includes variations on some old technology with some new emerging technology. The WAN and mix of network services are just the beginning.

On this panel, we will hear a perspective on evolving network services requirements, including the need for end-to-end visibility. Service providers will share their thoughts on the evolution of MEF services, including MEF 3.0, CE 2.0 success stories, challenges and opportunities, and near and medium term plans for new service roll-outs.

MEF 3.0 Lifecycle Services Orchestration (LSO) Framework and APIs

MEF’s LSO Reference Architecture (MEF 55) guides agile development of standardized models, processes, tools, and LSO APIs for end-to-end orchestration of MEF 3.0 services across multiple providers and over multiple network technology domains (e.g., Optical Transport, CE, IP, 5G, etc.).

This segment will cover the fundamentals of the LSO RA, discuss LSO API and SDK (software development kit) roadmaps, and share examples of standards and open source collaboration on LSO development. MEF is working to create a suite of inter-provider LSO APIs dealing with automation of commercial contractual agreements, address validation, serviceability, ordering, quoting, billing, assurance, testing, and change management.

Attendees will participate in live polling and Q&A to identify regional priorities and trends related to inter-provider API development.


MEF 3.0 Implementation Projects: Accelerating New Service Deployments

MEF’s new business model supports use-case driven live prototype implementations of numerous MEF 3.0 service configurations on the MEF sandboxing platform ‘MEFnet’, designed to accelerate the understanding and adoption of MEF 3.0, as well as to provide immediate feedback to the standards development projects in MEF.

In this segment, we explore MEF 3.0 service implementations including achievements and lessons learned, the plan to evolve these projects during 2018, other projects on the roadmap for the year and opportunities for participation. Projects described include the following and more:

MEF 3.0 Services/Technology Certification & MEF Professional Certification Programs

MEF has increased the agility of its popular Services/Technology Certification Programs and expanded its Professional Certification Program to accelerate development and adoption of MEF 3.0 services and technologies.

The MEF 3.0 framework provides the ability, for the first time, to move to an incremental release approach for both services and LSO APIs and to tightly align certification with each release. MEF 3.0 certification is delivered by MEF’s testing partner, Iometrix, on a revolutionary on-demand, cloud-based virtual test platform with user-initiated testing.

In 2017, MEF introduced a new Professional Certification Framework for creating a global base of certified professionals with the leading-edge skills required to build automated networks powered by LSO, SDN, NFV, and CE. The framework expands upon MEF’s popular Carrier Ethernet Certified Professionals (MEF-CECP) program to add new MEF Network Foundations (MEF-NF) and MEF-SDN & NFV Professional Certifications.


MEF 3.0 & The Road to 5G: Transport, Network Slicing, Orchestration, and Fixed-Mobile Convergence

5G aims to provide higher capacity and higher density broadband, low latency, ultra-reliable communication, and massive machine-to-machine communication (IoT). These characteristics of 5G will also expedite the Fixed–mobile convergence, providing a superior experience to customers by creating seamless services using a combination of fixed broadband and access wireless technologies. 5G imposes requirements on both the mobile and transport networks as well as on the orchestration of the network and the services.

MEF has a long history of providing service definitions for mobile transport supporting 2G through 4G/LTE. MEF 5G work addresses the new latency, isolation, and capacity requirements of 5G as well as the management and orchestration of the network and the services. This segment provides an overview of the new requirements of 5G and the MEF 3.0 work to address them: Transport for 5G, Network Slicing, Orchestrating 5G Services, and Services over 5G.
