MEF Carrier Ethernet Certified Professionals Triple in 12 Months as MEF-CECPs Exceed 1,000

Los Angeles, September 5, 2013 —The Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) announces that the number of MEF Carrier Ethernet Certified Professionals (MEF-CECPs) has more than tripled over the past 12 months. This is due in great part to the number of service providers and network equipment vendors that have adopted the telecommunications industry’s first vendor-independent certification as part of their job training/career development programs. At a current global count of 1,092 MEF-CECPs, spread across 47 countries and 190 companies, 25 of those companies now have more than 10 MEF-CECPs in their organisation. These companies include:

  • Fujitsu Network Communications
  • Tata Communications
  • TW Telecom
  • Rogers Communications
  • Alaska Communications
  • Overture Networks

A full breakdown of all MEF-CECPs can be found on the MEF's Ethernet Academy website.

“Reaching the milestone of our 1,000th MEF-CECP in such a short time-frame is an important proof point of the value being placed on this certification by a wide cross-section of Carrier Ethernet equipment vendors and service providers, around the world,” said Nan Chen. “And, while North America continues to lead with over 50% of all MEF-CECPs and nearly 230% growth since July 2012, the MEF-CECP program is also seeing success in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region with a 205% growth rate, and 25% of the global MEF-CECP count.”

The MEF-CECP certification program adoption follows a similar pattern across all regions over the past year with a 190% growth in Middle East/Africa (MEA), 157% in Central America/Latin America (CALA) and 87% in Europe.

Fujitsu has held the top spot for 15 months, with 92 MEF-CECPs, followed by Tata Communications. “Carrier Ethernet has transformed network services – consider the evolution of cell site backhaul as one data point,” said Ralph Santitoro, Director of Strategic Market Development at Fujitsu and co-chair of the MEF’s Professional Certification subcommittee. “Carrier Ethernet knowledge is required across all organizations that define, design, sell and support products. We see strong demand for MEF-certified Carrier Ethernet skills and have ensured we have plenty of MEF-CECPs to best help our customers ride the Carrier Ethernet wave.”

According to the latest forecast from Ovum, the CE Enterprise Market is set to reach $60bn by 2018. Supporting this growth will be the 1,000 MEF-CECPs certified as of today, and the tens of thousands more who will join them by 2018."

Close to 50% of all the MEF-CECPs are from Tier 1 and Tier 2 service providers. Tata Communications leads the way for service providers with 63 MEF-CECPs in its organization, followed closely by TW Telecom and Time Warner Cable. Henry Bohannon, Senior Director of Ethernet Product Management at Tata Communications explains: “A large pool of MEF-CECPs supports our credibility as a premier, global, Carrier Ethernet service provider. It underlines our policy of investing in people as well as infrastructure and assures our customers receive the highest levels of support”.

On the occasion of its 1,000th MEF-CECP milestone, the MEF is also recognizing the top scoring 1% of examinees that passed the rigorous MEF-CECP exam. These include:

Larry MacFadyen (ADVA Optical Networking SE)

Isabelle Morency (Carrier Ethernet Academy)

Jean-Francois Levesque (Fibrenoire)

Arun Bheemarao (Tellabs)

Jose Del Riso (Tellabs)

Thomas Rarick (Tellabs)

Industry moves to enhance Ethernet for the Cloud

CloudEthernet Forum launched with close MEF collaboration

May 23rd, 2013, Mountain View, California, USA: Launched today, the CloudEthernet Forum addresses the specific issues of scaling and applying suitable Ethernet services to meet the stringent demands of delivering cloud services.

With virtual machine populations running into the millions across geographically dispersed datacenters plus the migration of storage networks to Ethernet, the Forum provides a unique framework for industry stakeholders to collectively develop solutions that address technical challenges such as VLAN scaling, layer 2 performance and resilience across very large domains and consolidating storage network technologies onto Ethernet.

James Walker, president of the CloudEthernet Forum and vice president of Managed Network Services, Tata Communications, explains how the Forum is addressing real concerns, “Four years ago we migrated our Ethernet services over SDH to native Ethernet over PBB and it is proving highly popular with our datacenter customers. They love Ethernet’s simplicity and scalability and want more. However, as datacenter networks become larger and more sophisticated, they are coming up against challenges, and the CloudEthernet Forum is committed to resolving those issues.”

Ultimately, the work of the CloudEthernet Forum enables cloud service providers, carriers and enterprises to quickly and simply build and manage very large amounts of computing and storage capacity to meet the rapidly changing localized performance, scalability and regulatory requirements of cloud services, all while optimizing operational costs. MEF launches Service Operations Committee to improve Ethernet processes

Service Operations Committee to streamline buying, selling, delivering and operating Carrier Ethernet services

Mountain View CA, May 23rd 2013: The MEF has launched the Service Operations Committee (SOC), the organization’s first new committee in eight years, joining the existing technical, marketing and certification committees.

The purpose of the Service Operations Committee, which has widespread support from MEF members, is to “define, streamline and standardize processes for buying, selling, delivering and operating MEF-defined services”. Allan Langfield (Comcast) and Shahar Steiff (PCCW Global) have been appointed as committee co-chairs.

For service providers, this new committee means more consistent contracts and clarification of different providers’ capabilities, a standardized ordering process that takes into account national regulatory factors as well as the greater diversity of Ethernet services over those of TDM services. In addition, service providers will benefit from accelerated negotiation and deployment of services.

“Our internal survey concluded that two thirds of our members favor the new committee and its associated benefits,” said Ihab Tarazi, MEF chairman of the board and Verizon’s vice president of product technology. “Carrier Ethernet 2.0, and notably E-Access, have done a great deal to streamline the technical issues aligning wholesale carrier Ethernet services, and now it is time to bring the business processes into alignment. This is a significant development for the MEF and will require greater participation by higher level executives with operational roles in addition to the technical contributions from MEF members.”

The intial goal will be to increase the consistency of services available from providers and to reduce the number of service descriptions in contracts to simplify the purchasing process. The ordering process also will be simplified by greater global consistency among order field names and values.Service providers will benefit from the streamlined ordering process and reduced cost of providing the same information to different providers.

Wiki-based collaboration tools, online meetings and physical meetings will be used to encourage global participation in the working group.

“We have created this new team to explore how the MEF can facilitate the industry’s implementation of Ethernet,” said Nan Chen, president, MEF. “This is the MEF’s second major initiative this year in addition to the newly launched CloudEthernet Forum that addresses the specific challenges of pure Ethernet cloud delivery across large and geographically dispersed datacenters.”

“Carrier Ethernet has become the industry’s biggest success story of the past decade,” said Nan Chen, President of the MEF. “With India, China and other Asian countries continuing to drive the global economy, interconnectivity – both within the region and into other world markets – is key. Effectively, Telstra Wholesale’s customers can be confident that these services offer ‘world’s best practice’, - certified by the MEF. What’s more, Telstra Wholesale customers can now enjoy the inherent advantages of CE 2.0’s multi-CoS plus sophisticated end-to-end management capabilities.”

CE 2.0 extends Carrier Ethernet with vital added features, including multiple classes of service, greater manageability and easier interconnect for four standard service types (E-Line, E-Lan, E-Tree and E-Access) enabling new levels of efficiency for mobile backhaul, making it easier for a large number of access providers to join the Carrier Ethernet community and establish Carrier Ethernet as a business class cloud service carrier. Service Providers choose to certify one or more of these four service types, progressively certifying additional service types as customer demand warrants.

According to Telstra Wholesale’s Mr Bryce Blacker, General Manager - Solutions: “CE 2.0 E-Line certification is a whole lot more stringent than earlier Carrier Ethernet acccreditations, and we are proud to be the first to achieve it in the APAC region. Telstra Wholesale can now offer its customers four classes of service, targeting a range of business applications from the stringent demands of voice/video down to the best effort needs of Internet browsing. In addition, the CE 2.0 SOAM capability provides enhanced end-to-end manageability so our customers can benefit from fast, fine-grained fault detection and localization across a nation-wide fibre network covering approximately 1700 metro, inter-city, and regional Exchange Serving Areas (ESA’s). Meanwhile, we are accelerating our employee training group-wide to ensure an ample resource of MEF-CECPs to back our service delivery with the very best in professional support.”

Telstra’s commitment to Carrier Ethernet reflects the industry’s biggest success story of the past decade. For the first time this year, CE services share of bandwidth exceeded the sum total of all legacy telecoms services across the world, making it the dominant technology in the carrier space, according to Vertical Systems Group. Last year over 1.2 billion new Ethernet ports were shipped (400 million wired and 800 million wireless) according to IDC, and Frost & Sullivan, Vertical Systems and Infonetics predict a near $48+ billion services market by 2015.

Carrier Ethernet 2.0 Has Arrived

Comcast Business Services is World’s First CE 2.0 Service Provider

After the first 20 Equipment Vendors certified for CE 2.0, Service Providers now follow suit

NetEvents, Wednesday 20th February 2013, Phuket,Thailand: Comcast Corporation, a global media and technology company based in the U.S., has become the first Service Provider in the world to achieve CE 2.0 status.

“A milestone was reached this year when for the first time Carrier Ethernet services share of bandwidth exceeded the sum total of all legacy telecoms services across the world, with Frost & Sullivan, Vertical Systems and Infonetics predicting a near $48 billion services market by 2015. We are therefore very pleased to see that Comcast has achieved the latest milestone in our industry - becoming the first CE 2.0 Service Provider,” said Nan Chen, President, MEF.

The news follows the MEF’s recent announcement of the first twenty vendors to offer Carrier Ethernet 2.0 certified products in San Diego on January 29th. According to the MEF, this will mean a surge in the number of access providers in the Carrier Ethernet industry, new markets for regional providers, application-oriented SLAs, optimized mobile backhaul and cloud service delivery.

Ihab Tarazi, Chairman of the MEF added: “Certification will enable service providers to choose equipment vendors with greater speed, clarity and certainty. CE 2.0 Certification marks a significant moment in the life of the MEF and Carrier Ethernet.”

The first twenty CE 2.0 vendors are: Accedian, Altera, BTI Systems, Ciena, Cisco, Cyan, FibroLAN, Huawei, Infinera, Juniper Networks, MRV, Omnitron, Overture, PT Inovacao, Pulsecom, RAD Data Communications, Telco Systems, Tellabs, Transition Networks and Transmode.

“It is a natural outcome that the Service Provider community will seek out equipment vendors with CE 2.0 certification,” says Kevin Vachon, COO of the MEF. “Now we expect to see the enterprises specifying CE 2.0 services from their service provider partners.”

Latest generation CE 2.0 extends the original purpose of Carrier Ethernet with vital added features, including multiple classes of service, greater manageability and easier interconnect for eight standard service types, enabling new levels of efficiency for mobile backhaul, making it easier for a large number of access providers to join the Carrier Ethernet community and establish Carrier Ethernet as a business class cloud service carrier. According to Vachon: “The main market drivers continue to dominate business: bandwidth growth, mobile data and LTE migration and the growth of public and private cloud computing.”

Bob Metcalfe, Inventor of the Ethernet, summed up saying: “40 years after its inception, Ethernet continues to innovate. CE 2.0 gives service providers and vendors the ability to drive global interconnection and deliver a whole host of services to enterprises rapidly and with multiple classes of service and robust service level agreements. Carrier Ethernet continues to dominate and surpass all other WAN technologies and services on the market.”
