MEF 3.0 Transformational Global Services Framework

MEF 3.0 is a transformational framework for defining, delivering, and certifying agile, assured, and orchestrated communication services across a global ecosystem of automated networks.

Standardized, Orchestrated Services

MEF 3.0 services empower users with the dynamic performance and security required to thrive in the digital economy. Breaking free from the constraints imposed by static connectivity and time-consuming manual processes, MEF 3.0 services provide an on-demand, cloud-centric experience with unprecedented user- and application-directed control over network resources and service capabilities.

MEF 3.0 drives continuous development of the world’s most advanced standards-based network services. The planned MEF 3.0 service family includes dynamic Carrier Ethernet, Layer 1, IP, SD-WAN, security, and other virtualized services that will be orchestrated over programmable networks using LSO (Lifecycle Service Orchestration) APIs. MEF 3.0 CE R1 is the first release within the MEF 3.0 framework, while work on standardizing other orchestration-ready services is progressing.

Open LSO APIs

MEF’s LSO Reference Architecture guides agile development of standardized open LSO APIs that enable end-to-end orchestration of MEF 3.0 services across multiple providers and over multiple network technology domains (e.g., Optical Transport, CE, IP, 5G, etc.).

LSO enables service providers to transition from a silo-structured BSS/OSS approach towards flexible end-to-end orchestration that helps maximize return on SDN and NFV investments.

Service and  Technology Certifications

MEF has increased the agility of its popular service and equipment certification programs to accelerate availability and adoption of MEF 3.0 certified services and technologies.

MEF 3.0 certification is delivered by MEF’s testing partner, Iometrix, on a revolutionary, on-demand cloud-based virtual test platform that empowers subscribing companies to certify that their services and technologies comply with the latest MEF 3.0 releases.

The MEF 3.0 framework provides the ability, for the first time, to move to an incremental release approach for both services and LSO APIs and to tightly align certification with each release.

Community Collaboration

MEF is working with many of the world’s leading service and technology providers, open source projects, standards associations, and enterprises to realize a shared vision of orchestrating dynamic services across multiple providers and network technology domains.

As part the MEF 3.0 agile standards development process, many MEF members are involved implementation projects to maximize alignment of market implementations with LSO API and services specifications. The MEFnet compute, storage, and networking platform enables development, testing, integration, and showcasing of the implementations using open source and commercial products.

MEF regularly hosts LSO Hackathons that enable open source community developers and networking professionals to create LSO-SDN-NFV based solutions that can be used in open source projects and in development of LSO API specifications.

MEF’s active Software Developer Community helps develop and enhance LSO API specifications.

MEF recently launched an Enterprise Advisory Council to drive adoption of MEF 3.0 services for cloud delivery of enterprise SaaS applications and to explore LSO principles and open APIs for on-premises enterprise automation.

MEF 3.0 Services Circle

In 2017, MEF introduced a Professional Certification Framework for creating a global base of certified professionals with the leading-edge skills required to build automated networks powered by LSO, SDN, NFV, and CE. MEF now offers MEF Carrier Ethernet (MEF-CECP), MEF-SDN/NFV, and MEF Network Foundations (MEF-NF) professional certifications.

MEF – Accelerating Industry Innovation
